ReadingRate carries the winners and shortlists of the major literary prizes — the Booker and International Booker, the Pulitzer for Fiction, the Nobel in Literature, the Women's Prize, the National Book Award, the Prix Goncourt, the Costa, the PEN/Faulkner and the Dublin Literary Award — alongside canonical lists including the Modern Library 100, Le Monde's 100 Books of the Century, TIME's All-TIME 100 Novels and the Open Syllabus top 500. Every book carries its difficulty score, and if you're signed in the ones you've read are ticked. The pages are public and need no account.

Most prize archives are a list of press releases by year. Here each entry is a book with data attached, which is what lets you sort a decade of Booker shortlists by how hard they are and find the one you could start tonight.

Shortlists and longlists are included where a prize has them, not just the winner — the Booker alone runs to about five hundred entries from 1969 onward. The runners-up are frequently the more interesting half of a prize year.

Filters cover status and decade on award pages, and nationality, genre and difficulty on the canonical lists, which can also be sorted by literary regard.

What it can't do

  • Coverage is uneven. The Booker, Nobel, National Book Award, Women's Prize and Pulitzer go back decades; the Hugo and Nebula have only the last few years and are thin.
  • Some canonical lists are partial. The BBC Big Read holds a fraction of its hundred, and the 1001 Books list a small share of its full sweep.
  • Where a prize has several categories it is generally the fiction one that is tracked. The Pulitzer and National Book Award here are both the fiction prizes.
  • The Nobel is awarded to a writer rather than a book, so it is listed as that laureate's works rather than a single winning title.
  • Difficulty scores appear only where the book has been scored. An obscure shortlisted title may have none.
