Share a card that says what kind of reader you are

ReadingRate can draw you a reader card: an image carrying your name, how many books you have finished, up to three subjects you have read deeply enough to have earned a stage in, and which of Northrop Frye's four seasons your reading leans towards — spring for comedy, summer for romance, autumn for tragedy, winter for irony and myth. It is free, made only when you ask for it, and comes back as an image to post, copy or download.

Available on web.

The season is the part worth having, because it is not a personality quiz. It is counted from the Frye classification of the books you actually finished, so it changes if your reading changes and it cannot be answered dishonestly.

The subjects follow the same rule as the rest of the app: a domain only appears once you have two finished books in it or have moved past newcomer. A card that listed every subject you had brushed against would be flattery, and flattery is not worth posting.

What it can't do

  • Web only. There is no reader card in the iOS app.
  • You need at least one finished book. With an empty shelf the card is refused rather than padded out.
  • Three subjects at most, and only ones you have earned. A wide, shallow library produces a card with no subjects on it.
  • The season depends on catalogue books having been placed in Frye's scheme. A library of unplaced or obscure titles produces a card with no season line.
  • There is one card per reader. Making a new one replaces the previous image at the same address.
  • It counts finished books. It has no way of knowing which ones you understood.
