Share a quote as an image

Any passage you have saved in ReadingRate can be turned into an image to post. Choose one of three styles, one of three shapes — square, story or landscape — set the typeface, highlight a phrase inside the passage, and add a note of up to a hundred characters. The card is drawn on your own device rather than generated by a model, so it appears the moment you ask for it, and it is free for anyone with an account.

The usual way to share a passage is to photograph the page, which produces a picture that is unreadable at the size anyone will actually see it. A card is set type on a plain ground, so the sentence survives the journey.

Because it is composed from the text you saved rather than from a photograph, the wording is exact and the attribution is attached. The passage stays selectable and copyable on the card's own page, which matters if someone wants to quote it onward.

The card's page is public, and a link to it carries a preview into Twitter, Slack, WhatsApp, LinkedIn and Discord.

What it can't do

  • The card carries the passage, the author and the book title. There is no cover image on it.
  • The public link is made in the web app. On iOS the card is an image you save to Photos or hand to the share sheet; it does not get a page of its own.
  • The card's page links back to ReadingRate rather than to the book's catalogue page.
  • Each shape holds a different amount of text — landscape the least, square the most — and the app marks which one fits the passage you picked. A long passage in a story-shaped card will be cramped.
  • It makes a passage shareable. It does not decide which passage is worth sharing.
