ReadingRate · A ten-round quiz
What would your reading get you a PhD in?
Each round shows four books from four different fields. Choose the one you would spend a semester on. Read it or not, it counts the same. About two minutes.
What you get
- Your field. One of 65, from Power & Politics in Russian Literature to Myth & Folklore in Fantasy.
- Your dissertation. A title written for that field.
- Your committee. Three writers from the books you chose.
- Your reading list. Five books still to read in the field, with how long each takes, and the total as your time to degree.
- Your defense. The hardest book you chose, by its ReadingRate difficulty score.
How the field is chosen
Every book in the ReadingRate catalogue is tagged with the themes it explores and the traditions, periods and forms it belongs to. The quiz counts the tags your ten choices share. Three or more books in one field, such as Faith & Spirituality in Russian Literature, earn that field. Otherwise the theme they share most is your field. Reading times are ReadingRate's estimates, worked out from each book's length and difficulty, the same figures as on the book pages.
