Alfred Bertram Guthrie Jr. worked as a journalist in Kentucky before returning to Montana to write fiction. "The Way West" earned him the Pulitzer Prize in 1950, following his breakthrough "The Big Sky." His novels strip the frontier of romantic varnish, revealing the loneliness and environmental cost of westward expansion. He also wrote the screenplay for "Shane."
