Abdulrazak Gurnah left Zanzibar for England in 1968, fleeing persecution that shaped his literary imagination for decades. His novels—"Paradise," "By the Sea," "Afterlives"—explore displacement and colonial aftermath. The Swedish Academy awarded him the 2021 Nobel Prize in Literature for his "uncompromising and compassionate penetration of the effects of colonialism."
