Achmat Dangor wrote from South African history's fault lines. "Bitter Fruit," shortlisted for the 2004 Booker Prize, confronts apartheid-era violence through one family's buried trauma. He worked in development while producing fiction that refused easy reconciliation. He died in 2020, having spent his career insisting that justice requires reckoning with uncomfortable truths.
