Adalbert Stifter was an Austrian writer and painter whose novels and stories are celebrated for their precise descriptions of nature and their moral vision of order and cultivation. His major works — Indian Summer and Witiko — are among the most ambitious achievements of Austrian prose. His short stories, collected in Bunte Steine, are masterpieces of descriptive writing.
