Alaa Al Aswany is an Egyptian novelist and dentist whose novel The Yacoubian Building became the bestselling Arabic-language novel in decades. A prominent public intellectual and supporter of the 2011 Egyptian revolution, he has faced political persecution for his outspoken criticism of the Egyptian government. He now lives in exile in the United States.
