Alejo Carpentier was a Cuban novelist, essayist, and musicologist who coined the term 'lo real maravilloso' — the marvelous real — to describe the distinctive quality of Latin American reality. His novels include The Kingdom of This World, The Lost Steps, and Explosion in a Cathedral. He is considered one of the founders of magical realism.
