Aleksandar Hemon

American · b. 1964

Aleksandar Hemon fled Sarajevo's siege and reinvented himself as an American writer. "The Lazarus Project" interweaves a 1908 Chicago killing with contemporary immigrant experience. Writing in his second language, Hemon crafts prose both precise and strange, showing how displacement can become literary fuel. His memoir "The Book of My Lives" won the National Book Critics Circle Award.
