Alexander Pushkin single-handedly elevated Russian from a language the aristocracy considered inferior to French into one capable of the full range of literary expression. In a career cut short by a fatal duel at thirty-seven, he produced poetry, prose, drama, and criticism that founded virtually every major tradition in Russian letters.
