American · 1926–2020

Alison Lurie observed American manners with anthropologist's detachment. "Foreign Affairs" won the 1985 Pulitzer Prize, examining transatlantic romance with wit and precision. A professor at Cornell, Lurie also wrote influential studies of children's literature. Her novels dissect academic and social worlds with sharp but never cruel irony.
