André Brink was one of the first Afrikaans-language writers to have work banned by South Africa's apartheid government. His novels "Rumours of Rain" and "An Instant in the Wind" both reached the Booker Prize shortlist, bringing international attention to resistance literature from within the regime. Brink wrote in both Afrikaans and English, often producing parallel versions of his novels, insisting that both languages could serve liberation. His fiction combined political urgency with literary ambition.
