Andrew Krivak's debut novel "The Sojourn" was a 2011 National Book Award finalist. The novel follows a Slovak-American who returns to his father's Carpathian village and becomes an Austro-Hungarian sharpshooter in World War One. Krivak's spare prose rendered the war's violence and the landscapes of central Europe with equal intensity. A former Jesuit, he brings moral seriousness to fiction about violence, loyalty, and home.
