Ann Radcliffe was the most popular and influential Gothic novelist of the 1790s. Her novels, including The Mysteries of Udolpho and The Italian, established the conventions of the female Gothic and introduced the technique of the explained supernatural. She was the highest-paid novelist of her generation.
