Anna Burns

British · b. 1962

Anna Burns won the 2018 Booker Prize for "Milkman," a novel set during the Northern Irish Troubles told in the voice of a young woman navigating paramilitaries, surveillance, and male menace. The Belfast-born author wrote in long, unparagraphed streams that mimicked the circumlocution required to survive in a community where naming things directly can get you killed. "Milkman" took Burns nearly a decade to write; the wait was justified.
