Anne Frank kept a diary while hiding from the Nazis in occupied Amsterdam. Born in Frankfurt, her family fled to the Netherlands in 1933. From July 1942 to August 1944, she lived with her family and four others in concealed rooms behind her fathers business. During these two years, she filled notebooks with observations about daily life, her feelings about confinement, and her ambitions to become a writer. The Gestapo discovered their hiding place in August 1944. Anne died of typhus in Bergen-Belsen concentration camp, weeks before liberation. Her father Otto, the only survivor of the group, published her diary in 1947. It has since been translated into over 70 languages.
