Annie Proulx won the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award for "The Shipping News," a 1993 novel about a failed journalist rebuilding his life in Newfoundland. The American author writes about landscape as destiny, whether Wyoming ranches or Atlantic fishing communities. Her prose style—compressed, eccentric, dense with regional vocabulary—created something new in American fiction. Proulx's short story "Brokeback Mountain" became an Oscar-winning film.
