The Beowulf poet is unknown. The poem survives in a single manuscript, the Nowell Codex, copied around the year 1000 in Old English, though the work it records is probably older and was carried orally before it was written down. Nothing certain is known about the author beyond what the poem itself implies: a Christian writer working with inherited Germanic heroic material, familiar with both traditions and at ease moving between them.
