The Song of Roland survives in an Oxford manuscript of around 1100 and names a Turoldus in its final line, though whether he was poet, scribe or reciter is unresolved. The Roman de Renart, the beast epic behind Reynard the Fox, is a composite of branches by several unnamed authors written across the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. Both belong to Old French vernacular tradition rather than to any single writer.
