The Poetic Edda survives chiefly in the Codex Regius, an Icelandic manuscript of the 1270s that collects mythological and heroic poems considerably older than its own copying. No author is named for any of them; they were carried orally within Norse tradition before being written down, and they are the primary source for most of what is known of Norse mythology.
