The Epic of Gilgamesh evolved over more than a millennium from independent Sumerian poems into a unified Akkadian narrative. The Standard Babylonian version is attributed to Sin-leqi-unninni, a scribe who likely lived around 1200 BCE, but he compiled existing traditions rather than composing from whole cloth.
