Lucius Apuleius was a Numidian-born Latin prose writer, Platonist philosopher, and rhetorician. His novel The Golden Ass (Metamorphoses) is the only Latin novel to survive in its entirety and one of the earliest extant novels in any language. He was tried for sorcery and acquitted, an experience that may have influenced the novel.
