August Strindberg was Sweden's greatest playwright and one of the founders of modern theatre. His naturalist plays, including Miss Julie and The Father, brought raw psychological intensity to the stage, while his later expressionist works, including A Dream Play and The Ghost Sonata, anticipated surrealism and the theatre of the absurd.
