Augustine of Hippo was a North African bishop, theologian, and philosopher whose writings shaped Western Christianity, philosophy, and literary tradition for sixteen centuries. His Confessions invented spiritual autobiography, and his City of God provided the theological framework for medieval Christendom. He remains the most influential theologian in the Western tradition.
