Beryl Bainbridge was shortlisted for the Booker Prize five times, never winning despite critical consensus that she deserved to. "Every Man for Himself" reimagined the Titanic; "Master Georgie" the Crimean War. Her novels compress violence and comedy into claustrophobic spaces. Bainbridge died in 2010, posthumously receiving recognition as one of Britain's finest novelists.
