Bessie Head was a South African-born writer who spent most of her adult life in Botswana as a stateless exile from apartheid. Her novels and stories explore themes of exile, racial identity, community, and spiritual crisis with an intensity drawn from personal experience. She is now regarded as one of the most important African women writers of the twentieth century.
