Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson shaped Norwegian literature and national identity. The 1903 Nobel Prize in Literature recognized his "noble, magnificent and versatile poetry." Beyond fiction, he wrote Norway's national anthem and championed progressive causes. Bjørnson's work helped create the idea of Norway itself.
