Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson combined literary ambition with political activism, becoming Norway's leading cultural figure in the late nineteenth century. His novels and plays depicted Norwegian rural and urban life with naturalistic detail. The 1903 Nobel Prize in Literature honored both his artistry and his role in shaping Scandinavian consciousness.
