Anicius Manlius Severinus Boethius was a Roman senator, philosopher, and translator who served under the Ostrogothic king Theodoric. Imprisoned and executed on charges of treason, he wrote The Consolation of Philosophy in prison, producing one of the most influential books of the Middle Ages.
