Bohumil Hrabal was a Czech writer whose works combine earthy humor, philosophical depth, and a distinctive breathless prose style. Closely Watched Trains and I Served the King of England are his most internationally known works. The 1966 film adaptation won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.
