Can Xue (pen name meaning 'dirty snow that refuses to melt') is a Chinese avant-garde novelist and literary critic. Largely self-taught, she has produced a body of work that draws on Kafka, Borges, and Dante while remaining radically original. She is a perennial Nobel Prize contender.
