Carlo Emilio Gadda was an Italian novelist and engineer, regarded as one of the great prose stylists of twentieth-century Italian literature. His two major novels — That Awful Mess on the Via Merulana and Acquainted with Grief — are celebrated for their linguistic richness, philosophical depth, and radical formal experimentation. His influence on Italian literature is comparable to Joyce's on English-language writing.
