Cesare Pavese was an Italian novelist, poet, literary critic, and translator. He was instrumental in introducing American literature to Italian readers through his translations of Melville, Faulkner, and Dos Passos. His novels, including The Moon and the Bonfires and The House on the Hill, explore memory, landscape, and the tension between rural and urban life. He committed suicide in 1950.
