Charles Darwin was a British naturalist whose theory of evolution by natural selection is the foundation of modern biology. His five-year voyage on HMS Beagle provided the observations that shaped his thinking. Despite chronic illness and awareness of the social upheaval his ideas would cause, he spent over twenty years gathering evidence before publishing.
