Charles Maturin

Irish · 1780–1824

Charles Robert Maturin was an Irish Protestant clergyman and novelist whose Melmoth the Wanderer is considered the last and greatest of the first wave of Gothic novels. His work influenced Balzac, Baudelaire, Wilde, and Lovecraft. He also wrote plays and earlier Gothic novels, but Melmoth is his enduring achievement.
