Chris Bachelder's "The Throwback Special" was a 2016 National Book Award finalist for its account of middle-aged men who gather annually to reenact a notorious NFL injury. The American author writes comic novels about American masculinity and ritual, finding in absurd premises occasions for genuine pathos. Bachelder's fiction is funny and sad in equal measure.
