Claire-Louise Bennett writes at the boundaries of fiction and essay. Born in England in 1983, she studied drama and philosophy at the University of Roehampton and moved to Galway, where she wrote Pond (2015)—a collection of connected stories about a woman living alone in rural Ireland that won the Dylan Thomas Prize and earned comparisons to Woolf and Beckett. The prose is precise, strange, and attuned to consciousness in motion. Checkout 19 (2022) pushed further into autobiography and invention, following a woman from childhood through writing itself. Bennett works slowly and exactly; her books are small but dense, full of sentences you want to read twice.
