Claude Farrère won the 1905 Prix Goncourt for "Les Civilisés" (The Civilized), a novel set in French Indochina that examined colonialism with an ambivalence unusual for its era. The French naval officer turned author wrote extensively about the Far East and maritime life. His work reflects early twentieth-century French engagement with empire—both its romance and its violence.
