Constantine Cavafy was a Greek poet who spent most of his life in Alexandria, Egypt. His 154 canonical poems, written in a distinctive blend of demotic and purist Greek, explore themes of desire, memory, and Hellenistic history. He is now recognized as one of the most important poets of the twentieth century.
