Czesław Miłosz won the 1980 Nobel Prize in Literature for work that "with uncompromising clear-sightedness voices man's exposed condition in a world of severe conflicts." His poetry and prose documented twentieth-century catastrophe from Polish perspective. "The Captive Mind" analyzed intellectual submission to totalitarianism. Miłosz proved that exile could become vantage point for seeing both East and West clearly.
