Daniel Mason writes novels that move between history, medicine, and the natural world. Raised in Palo Alto, he studied biology at Harvard before attending UCSF medical school, where he wrote his debut novel The Piano Tuner (2002). He now practices psychiatry at Stanford while continuing to write. His story collection A Registry of My Passage Upon the Earth was a 2021 Pulitzer Prize finalist. Mason received the Joyce Carol Oates Prize and a Guggenheim Fellowship. He lives in the Bay Area with his wife, novelist Sara Houghteling, and their two sons.
