Dannie Abse practiced medicine and wrote poetry for over six decades. "The Strange Case of Dr Simmonds and Dr Glass" was longlisted for the Booker Prize. Born in Wales to a Jewish family, Abse brought multiple identities to his work. He proved that a doctor could also be a major poet, bringing clinical observation to verse.
