Dario Fo won the 1997 Nobel Prize in Literature for work that "emulates the jesters of the Middle Ages in scourging authority and upholding the dignity of the downtrodden." His plays combined political satire with commedia dell'arte tradition. "Accidental Death of an Anarchist" remains internationally performed. Fo proved that theater could be both entertaining and revolutionary.
