Denis Diderot was a French philosopher, art critic, and novelist, best known as the co-founder and chief editor of the Encyclopédie. His fiction, including Jacques the Fatalist, Rameau's Nephew, and The Nun, was largely unpublished during his lifetime and was recognized only in the twentieth century as among the most innovative of the Enlightenment.
