Derek Walcott won the 1992 Nobel Prize in Literature for "a poetic oeuvre of great luminosity, sustained by a historical vision." His epic "Omeros" reimagined Homer through Caribbean experience. Born in Saint Lucia, Walcott made English serve West Indian speech and landscape. He proved that colonized peoples could transform the colonizer's language into new literature.
