D.H. Lawrence wrote about sex, class, and nature with intensity that still provokes. "Sons and Lovers" drew on his coal-mining background; later novels scandalized readers with their frankness. Lawrence's essays on literature remain influential. He died at 44 of tuberculosis, having produced work that expanded what fiction could explore about desire and consciousness.
