Donald Keene was an American scholar of Japanese literature and culture who became a Japanese citizen in 2012. He taught at Columbia University for decades and produced translations, biographies, and literary histories that remain the standard English-language references for the full range of Japanese writing. He received the Order of Culture from the Japanese government.
