Douglas Gifford was Emeritus Professor of Scottish Literature at the University of Glasgow, the foremost specialist in Scottish fiction of his generation, and author of studies on James Hogg and Neil Gunn. He devoted his career to the recovery and teaching of Scottish literary history.
